Mayor Lovero Visits Jefferson School!

On Wednesday October 18, 2017, the Honorable Berwyn Mayor Robert Lovero visited Jefferson School after 4th graders reached out to him for help with their social studies unit. Jefferson fourth graders were studying local and state government processes and functions in their social studies unit, and ESL teacher Dana Sartori decided to email the mayor directly for his answers to their many questions. Mayor Lovero's office replied almost immediately with his intent to visit Jefferson School in order to answer the many questions posed by our 4th graders in person!

In a 'professional' town hall format, and for almost an hour, the mayor answered many thoughtful, student-prepared questions in the Jefferson gym. Questions ranged from, 'What should we do if people are speeding down the streets and alleys by my house?' and 'How do we get a stop sign?' to 'Has there ever been a woman mayor in Berwyn?' to 'How much schooling do you need to be a mayor?' 'Can you explain what an alderman is and what he does?' 'Are you in charge of the police and how do you make laws in Berwyn?' Questions even became a little political, one in particular questions asked...,'Do you agree with Donald Trump and his plans to deport undocumented immigrants?'

After all of the questions were asked and it was time to go, Ms. Mitchell asked if he would hop up on stage for a group photo, which he did! Then Mayor Lovero invited Ms. Mitchell to organize a visit to city hall in order to afford students the opportunity to sit in his chair, vote or veto an ordinance or bill and let students actually experience a mock city council meeting with them as the participants! Plans are in the works for such an experience for students! Mr. Lovero was presented with a thank you card and basket of his favorite goodies as reported to us by his secretary, and off he went! A wonderful experience was had by all!

Thank you again Mayor Lovero for providing a wonderful learning opportunity for students!
